Intake Appointment

First session

Your first session will be different from ongoing sessions.  The first session / Intake appointment will be a time for you and your therapist to get to know each other and also discuss what you would like to work on together during your time in therapy.   This is your time, so you can talk about anything that’s on your mind openly and without the fear of judgment.  Subsequent sessions will be more therapeutic focused, such as symptom exploration, problems, you are dealing with, or past trauma that you would like to work through.

Please keep in mind that psychotherapy usually requires multiple visits, so please don’t expect instant solutions to all of your problems on the first day. Therapy will allow you to equip your life with ongoing learning and solutions, not a quick fix.

Ongoing Sessions

Everyone’s journey looks different

During your second and / or ongoing sessions you will work with your therapist to further define the goals that were established in session one and collaborate on a plan of action. This may include skill building, psychoeducation, coping skill development and practice, trauma processing and other techniques.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is a very structured therapy in which the patient will focus briefly on a traumatic memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (therapist guided non-invasive eye movement). This replicates REM cycles during sleep and allows for a profound reduction in the vividness and reactivity to emotions associated with the traumatic memories. This will allow your brain to correct learned, unhealthy associations and replace them with healthy adaptations to empower you to experience life differently or positively in the future.

Experiential Therapy

Experiential therapy uses the present moment experience as a guide to increase your insight and awareness which will allow you to make healthier decisions in the future.

A very different experience than traditional talk therapy,  this hands on approach involves “doing” rather than just talking as a means to discover elements about our personality and make changes in real time. This will typically involve doing something in session that illicits an extreme emotional response so that you can learn to manage the emotion appropriately with the assistance of your therapist.  When you encounter intense emotions outside of session, you will not be caught off guard and will have the skills you need to get through it independently.

Evidenced-Based Treatment Approaches

CBT, DBT, ACT, Psychodynamic and other theoretical orientations

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) reduces symptoms of various mental health conditions by teaching you to focus on your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.  These three elements relate to one another and dictate how we experience the world around us and identify our place within the world.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) focuses on helping us, except the reality of our lives, and our behaviors, as well as help us learn to change our lives, including unhelpful behaviors.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on helping us accept that the deeper feelings and emotions we experience are appropriate responses to certain situations in our lives. With this understanding, we can begin to see that these things should not prevent us from moving forward in life. With acceptance of our hardships we can begin to make necessary behavioral changes in our life.

Psychodynamic Therapy explores how our present mindset is rooted in our past experiences, usually from childhood.  By thoroughly analyzing insights from our childhood, we can use these insights to learn about the current problems we experience. These insights can help us challenge our current thought processes to achieve a higher quality of life.
